ExciteAtHome saw its ISP usage jump, but its portal has dropped from second-place in popularity to eighth place, a study says.

Excite's ISP cable modem service reached second-most-popular standing, behind AOL, says WebSideStory Inc.'s StatMarket. Excite's use quadrupled since early 1999, sending its usage share from 1.15 percent in January 1999, to 4.52 percent on June 21, 2001.

Usage share is the percentage of surfers using an ISP and measures how often an ISP is actually used as opposed to the number of subscribers it says it has, StatMarket says.

But's percentage of traffic it refers to other sites dropped from 26.51 percent in January 1999 to 2.35 percent on June 21, 2001. Most of the decline was in the first three quarters of 1999, the research firm reports.
