Studies detail broadband use; new markets

Despite their high-tech images, San Francisco and Seattle fell behind the New York City area in broadband usage. A Nielsen/NetRatings report says a good 10 percent of the country's broadband population is in New York City and its surrounding metro area, while San Francisco only mustered up 5.8 percent and Seattle, 3.6 percent.

Likewise, nearly 45 percent of the broadband population is in the country's top 10 markets and two-thirds in the top 30 metro areas, according to The Washington Post.

The broadband usage patterns follow the one previously set by Internet usage.

In a separate study, Yankee Group says the streaming media market is an emerging one for those "in the streaming media value change that provide tools, services and infrastructure for the creation, management, storage, distribution and delivery of digital media."

On the upside, streaming is an alternative for people trying to download rich media applications and their large files, Yankee Group says.

On the downside, the files "are highly sensitive to quality degradation due to packet loss, latency and network congestion — and they require a robust network infrastructure."

Moreover, high-speed access isn't yet widely available and affordable, despite industry investments, this nascent market "is gaining traction," the study says.
