Cisco ready to roll out metro DWDM system
Cisco Systems Inc. is launching its metro DWDM system for enterprise and service-provider networks.
The ONS 15540 Extended Services Platform is a modular, scalable and service-dense DWDM system that integrates data and storage networking and information streaming over a high bandwidth optical infrastructure that supports any packet on any wavelength from any platform, the company reports.
The platform is part of Cisco's efforts to capitalize on the metro optical market, predicted to reach $3.6 billion by 2004 in North America, Cisco reports.
Cisco says the platform can handle new applications and increasing network demands as needed.
The company will roll it out in multiple phases starting next month, it says, with future releases including multiplexing mixed services on a single wavelength, switching at the lambda or sublambda level, and 10-gig Ethernet and OC-192c support.
