TRW launched Velocium, a new provider of high-speed InP and GaAs components, and other products for fiber optic and wireless telecom systems.

The company invested more than $300 million in taking semiconductor capabilities to market, and committed $70 million more for InP manufacturing capacity expansion and product development.

Headed by President Dwight Streit, Velocium's initial product lines include integrated photoreceivers, modulator drivers and amplifiers for fiber optic systems operating at 40 Gbps and faster. It also includes InP power amplifiers for 2.5G and 3G wireless handsets.

Velocium's first product is a 40 Gbps OC-768 integrated photoreceiver, available this month. Power amplifier products will be available in 2002.
