Nortel Networks agreed to purchase and resell the MGW product line from Optibase, including its MGW-2000 media gateway.

The media gateway is multichannel and allows real-time streaming of MPEG digital video and audio over IP networks. It has an embedded operating system and can encode and transmit up to 16 streams simultaneously, including six in real time, Optibase reports.

It comes with a 2RU rack-mounted modular platform with a variety of network interfaces, and includes field-upgradable slots for a mix of modules. Its capabilities include MPEG-1, -2 and MP3 streaming from 32Kbps to 10 Mbps. Plans are for streaming in MPEG 4 and Microsoft WMT formats.
