EarthLink and 2Wire have launched EarthLink Home Networking, combining 2Wire's HomePortal 100 and HomePortal 1000 residential gateways and EarthLink's broadband services into a nationally available wired and wireless home networking service, EarthLink reports.

The system will allow residents simultaneous use of a variety of Internet, telephony and entertainment applications.

The HomePortal transforms a broadband Internet connection into a system capable of delivering data, telephony, networking and next-generation entertainment services throughout a residence, the company says. By plugging the HomePortal into any phone jack, EarthLink's customers on the service get the high-speed Internet connection and the ability to network PCs, peripherals and Internet appliances via an Ethernet, home phone line or wireless network without additional wiring.

The wireless version allows wireless connections to multiple computers via WiFi (802.11b), with commercial-level firewalls and VPN capability.
