So what's the deal with Lucent Technologies and Alcatel? Will Alcatel's be the winning bid for Lucent's optical division? Or will they merely merge?

Alcatel Chairman Serge Tchuruk reportedly has said the company has bid for the division.

"We are not commenting," Lucent spokeswoman Mary Ward told CEDaily, when asked if the company was taking bids. Lucent has repeatedly said there was no news amid talk of taking bids on its division. Reminded that Lucent Chair and CEO Henry Schacht already said the company was taking bids, Ward said the company was taking bids, but couldn't comment on how many, from whom or for how much.

Observers say the optical unit could bring Lucent $5 billion at best.

Alcatel spokesman Brian Murphy told CEDaily he could confirm that Alcatel had submitted a bid. "Confirmation is as far as I can go for now," he says.

As for talk that Alcatel and Lucent were considering a merger, "There are rumors and our policy is not to comment on rumors. I have no idea where (the merger talk) came from," he says.
