Insight Communications is installing Vela 's RapidAccess video server to better manage programming for three of its cable channels. RapidAccess will be installed on a dedicated fiber network, connecting a record-only workstation five miles from the playback unit located at the master control facility. The facility is located in Louisville, Ky.

According to the company, Insight will use RapidAccess to record and play back more than 100 hours of programming a week for some of its local origination, government access, and public access channels. Recorded media from both the public access and master control facilities is stored at the master control facility until aired, then the RapidAccess playback unit is transferred via a fiber optic line to the headend.

Insight has cable systems in Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio.

RapidAccess is an open-architecture video server that allows users to record, store, and play back video and audio using MPEG-2 compression. The system installed at Insight Communications' headend facility is equipped with three output channels and includes 200 hours of RAID storage.

"With the dedicated fiber network in place, RapidAccess can be operated remotely from our main office, allowing us greater flexibility and more efficient use of our personnel resources," said Tom Burnett, production and program manager, Insight Communications, in a statement.
