Concurrent Computer Corp. and Pace Micro Technology plc are combining their technologies to deliver video-on-demand and interactive digital video services.

Concurrent integrates its MediaHawk broadband VOD systems with Pace's digital home gateways to support such high-bandwidth digital broadband delivery systems as hybrid fiber coax (HFC), DSL and ATM transport networks. It also supports IP streaming and MPEG-2 transport streams.

"Depending on the type of network or transport, (time to market) can range from immediately to, say, within 90 days," says Del Kunert, Concurrent's marketing VP tells CEDaily. "Furthest out would (be those who) use the Pace set-top when integrated with the Liberate middleware platform."

Combining the two companies' strengths gives system operators more flexibility, and more integration and other options, he notes. The partnership works well for both companies, giving Pace access to Concurrent's North American customer base, and Concurrent a way to expand its existing European market. "They give us a lot of benefit," he says. "Conversely, we are a big VOD player, so we give them a leg up."

The technology mix lets broadband system operators comply with a broad range of international agency and defacto standards, including RTSP, DSM-CC user-network level one and DSM-CC user-user level two, and the Pegasus Interactive Services Architecture (ISA). It also is integrated with leading set-top box middleware, conditional access systems, electronic program guides and ITV applications.

Concurrent and Pace plan to jointly market and deploy the new system worldwide. Targeted customers in the UK and Europe include the key broadband system operators planning to deploy VOD and ITV services over HFC and DSL transport networks. In North America, Concurrent and Pace are Pegasus ISA suppliers, and the duo is also eyeing Asia's emerging digital TV markets.
