Free space optics to become billion dollar market
Years of development of free space optical technologies are expected to result in a billion dollar market early in 2003, according to a report by Allied Business Intelligence (ABI). After more than a decade of near idle growth, free space optical vendors are readying for an onslaught of demand.
The report, "Free Space Optics: Technologies and Opportunities in the Carrier Class Network," says free space optics are expected to provide operators with another tool to deliver the much sought-after level of services. Deployments are expected to be concentrated in urban environments to high value customers, a market the technology will share with local multipoint distribution services (LMDS).
Traditional applications, such as wireless links in private networks, are also expected to grow, but the carrier/access market is expected to overshadow all other segments of the free space optical market within five years, according to the report.
