Downturn hits modem market
Wondering about those mergers and company closures in the modem markets? According to a study by Cahners In-Stat, the research arm of CEDaily's parent company, analog and modem shipments fell last quarter, thanks to declining consumer and OEM purchases, but revenue decreases were even more drastic as average selling prices deteriorated. In-Stat credits fall PC shipments for the drop and notes the decline reflects the overall economic downturn. The study also found:
* Alcatel's market share in DSL customer premise equipment grew most quickly, with 3Com not far behind.
* US Robotics replaced 3Com as the dominant analog modem market player after 3Com turned over its analog-only products to US Robotics
* ADSL CPE shipment degradation was less severe quarter to quarter (1 percent decline) compared to cable modem shipments (13 percent).
