Aerocast wraps up trial
Aerocast, a broadband streaming media company backed by Motorola and Liberty Media, has completed its first consumer trial. The trial enabled its participants to access entertainment-quality streaming media on demand from their homes for the first time. For the trial, Aerocast streamed content from several partners including Starz Encore, Oasis TV and interactive TV provider ACTV.
During the three-month trial, Aerocast Video Exchanges (AVX), the company's proprietary media servers, were placed on the outer edge of cable TV provider Millennium Digital Media's Seattle, Wash. broadband network. The servers' edge placement, combined with Aerocast's intelligent routing system, allowed trial participants to receive entertainment-quality video over on the Internet with virtually none of the packet loss. The trial paves the way for content providers and broadband operators to make premium content available on demand to subscribers with broadband access.
Viewers watched more than 100 hours of video on their PCs during the trial. Ultimately Aerocast will deliver content to TVs equipped with set-top boxes.
