Com21 has improved one of its core products this week by joining forces with two software companies. This week the broadband access systems manufacturer inked deals with both Netsurfer and Alopa Networks.

Netsurfer's provisioning software, NetKit Cable Edition 5.1, will be incorporated into Com21's DOXport 1110 cable modems. The combination of hardware and software is aimed to increase operations efficiency, reduce installation times and prevent rolling trucks more than once. The software makes two-way communication with the subscriber possible, letting the cable operator deliver content, services and software support to the end user.

The DOXport 1110 will also use Alopa's MetaServ broadband self-provisioning solution. MetaServ helps cable operators cut provisioning and mediation costs by automating service creation, provisioning, billing and customer care.

To date, Com21 has shipped more than 1.2 million cable modems worldwide, along with more than 1,400 headend controllers. Com21 systems offer commercial service in cable systems passing 17 million households worldwide.
