Virtual visiting brought to you by Inter-Con/PC
Inter-Con/PC has taken those home video conferencing cameras off the PC and plopped them down on the set-top, bringing video conferencing into living rooms.
The Totebook 6500 Video Conferencing Internet TV set-top box package combines a 56K modem, 6GB hard drive and 64 MB RAM with a camera. Users can talk, as well as see and transfer files to friends or coworkers on a real-time basis or send full motion video at 30 frames per second. The TV acts as a monitor.
"The Totebook product line can be purchased now and demand is great," Krista Ferderer, director of marketing for Inter-Con/PC, tells CED. "There are several sectors that can take advantage of its applications, from education to business to consumer users. The telephone may become obsolete, so this facilitates communication over the Internet."
The Totebook 6500 also allows Internet and Ethernet access and all the word processing and spreadsheet capabilities of users' home PCs. Knowing couch potatoes probably aren't most interested in working while gazing at the TV, the Totebook also has 2D/3D gaming, DVD and CD capability, VOD and more.
Inter-Con/PC recommends DSL for videoconferencing, but the set-tops work with cable and satellite as well. The package is available for purchase on the Inter-Con/PC site for $1,895.
