Motorola's 10th annual marathon will take place February 18 in Austin, Texas. Motorola says the race now registers 8,000 runners.

"The Motorola Marathon demonstrates the operational excellence that is standard at Motorola and is also a showcase for how our technology and how our customers' products support the work team and individuals on the go," says David Doolittle, corporate vice president of human resources for Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector. Doolittle has led the coordinating committee for the marathon since its inception, and has run in four of the races.

The race uses some technology to assist the runners, such as on-shoe timing systems, two-way radio communications, cellular phones, pagers, electronic heart rate monitors worn by select runners, computer systems and global positioning systems for race leaders. But all the technology isn't going to run the race for them. A marathon is 26.2 miles.
