Experiment equals experience

Microsoft has created the TV Content Builder Initiative (CBI), a consortium of content developers. Members have access to the tools, templates and training materials Microsoft has developed to push forward interesting content creation for the enhanced digital TV movement. But the company has taken it one step further and has teamed up with Motorola to let the content creators develop, view and access their programming in the same way that consumers will actually experience it: on the Motorola DCT-5000+ advanced digital set-top box.

Using the box to frame and build the content assures content creators that what they can imagine is the same thing that viewers will receive and enjoy.

The Motorola DCT-5000+ digital set-top has, among other features, a DOCSIS compliant cable modem, 32-bit true color and 3-D graphics and PC-like functionality. Via the Triple-Tuner architecture, consumers can watch video, surf the 'Net and conduct an IP telephony call simultaneously using Motorola's interactive digital cable network.

Members of Microsoft's CBI include the Discovery Science Channel and its production plans for Electric Playground, a guide to e-gaming. Also included is Debating Our Destiny, a two-hour PBS documentary on the history of presidential debates. (They should add interesting presidential elections to that.) And DTN Weather Services is developing a personalized, multimedia weather service designed expressly for broadband-enhanced TV.

The Microsoft CBI/Motorola alliance was announced this week in Las Vegas at the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) 2001 Conference.
