Yesterday; modems, today, digital set-tops
Digital set-tops are poised for phenomenal growth. According to Allied Business Intelligence, the number of installed boxes will grow to 339 million by 2005. Yesterday, CED reported on the major growth of modems.
Digital set-top growth can be attributed to the popularity of digital cable service. By 2005, the cable platform will account for 40 percent of the total worldwide installed based of digital set-tops, outselling their satellite cousins, which were the catalyst for the first wave of deployed boxes.
Allied says the set-tops are at the epicenter of the convergence between the entertainment, computing and broadband industries.
