DOCSIS certified cable modems are shipping like crazy, up 67 percent in the second half of 2000. According to Cable Datacom News, more than 2 million units shipped in 3Q. Motorola has shipped the most — 540,000 in North America and 310,00 internationally.
However, Cahners In-Stat group predicts that the cable modem growth will continue but slow a bit in 4Q 2000.
"Now that DOCSIS is an established standard, we saw some manufacturers get into the game more tenaciously that they may have previously. However, we anticipate that slow build-out will limit growth going forward," says Mike Lowe, senior analyst for In-Stat's Advanced Carrier Service.
Following Motorola in big sales are Toshiba America, Thomson Consumer Electronics and 3Com, according to Cable Datacom News.
