'Desperate Housewives,' 'Lost' headline Apple's new iPod
Apple put video portability into the mainstream this week with the launch of its much-anticipated video iPod...and a major content deal in tow.
The device, which features a 2.5-inch color screen and hard drives of 30 GB or 60 GB, is getting off the ground with a deal with Disney, and downloadable access to TV primetime hits such as "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost," as well as Disney Channel fare ("That's So Raven" and "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody"), and short films from animation specialist Pixar for $1.99 each.
The new iPod will support iTunes 6, Apple's next-gen content platform, which initially will offer the above shows and shorts, and about 2,000 music videos.
"We're doing for video what we've done for music - we're making it easy and affordable to purchase and download, play on your computer, and take with you on your iPod," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs, in a release.
The new iPod can hold up to 150 hours of video. The 30 GB model sells for $299. The 60 GB version goes for $399. Both come in white or black designs. Apple will begin shipping the product next week.
Apple is just the latest to offer video-on-the-go technology. Earlier this week, EchoStar Communications launched a line of "PocketDISH" portable media players. Rather than supporting that product with a broadband download service, EchoStar enables users to transfer shows from the DVR to the PocketDISH device.
