Texas Instruments has developed a new silicon-based cable modem system that incorporates primary-line telephony for residential gateways, secondary-line voice for next-generation cable modems and multiline offerings for MDUs.

TI said its new chips feature DOCSIS 1.1 software and hardware capabilities that will eventually help cable operators offer voice-over-Internet-protocol services over their networks.

TI's system includes its "TNETC430" communications processor; an integrated DOCSIS physical layer and media-access control; and standardized VOIP software. The technology also complies with most major home-networkingprotocol standards, the company said.

The new chips will be available in sample quantities in late December and reach commercial production in 2Q 2001.
