Ouch. Qwest slapped with $350 million fine
Everything's bigger in Texas, including the fines for cutting your competitors phone line.
A Texas jury has ordered Denver-based Qwest to pay AT&T $350 million in punitive damages for cutting a phone line three times in 1997.
Qwest immediately bucked the fine for the slice and dice job, saying it violated a Texas statute that caps punitive damage amounts. The healthy chunk of change equates approximately three-fourths of Qwest's 1999 profit. The company is likely to appeal.
