Lucent looking to make it easier
Lucent is lending its support to the new industry standard for connecting dial-up modems to the Internet across its remote access platforms for service providers.
The new standard is called V.92, determined by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as a foundation for a new generation of modems for PCs and other access devices and the remote access equipment in service provider networks they connect to over phone lines.
V.92 adds three new features not found in the v.90 standard: faster Internet connection times, more upstream bandwidth and the ability to take another phone call without having to break an Internet connection.
The company has also begun testing with PC modem and modem chip vendors to shorten the process and timeframe in which standards-based equipment becomes available for both service providers and Internet users.
