Alone in a crowd
Zoom Telephonics' CableModem PCI is the first internal cable modem to earn both CableLabs and Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) certifications.
"This is the first full commercial product that has been authorized," Zoom spokesperson Larry Hancock told CED. "We're pretty excited. When you receive WHQL certification, two things happen. It tells PC vendors they can run programs like Microsoft Plug-and-Play and it also gives us access to a Microsoft marketing fund."
WHQL certification allows the Zoom product to display the "Designed for Windows Me," "Windows 98" and "Windows 2000 Professional" logos on its retail packages. Some major service providers require WHQL certification for internal cable modems they market.
"It's no secret that @Home wants the products they promote to have WHQL certification," said Hancock.
"The mood around here is very upbeat. It really gives an impetus to our sales efforts. It doesn't conclude a sale, but it gives our sales force the ammunition they need. There are no 'buts' left," said Hancock.
