Ooh la la! Scientific-Atlanta unveils its new star in Paris: the WebStar cable modem will show its stuff at the Broadband 2000 Conference this week.

Not only is this little number Windows CE and DOCSIS compliant, but not yet certified, it features connection speeds up to 43 Mbps downstream and 10 Mbps upstream. Many users can be connected at one time - appealing to the SOHO environment. And the small, compact design allows vertical or horizontal mounting.

"We are extremely well-positioned in the U.S. and the European cable markets," Dave Davies, director of strategic planning and development, told CED. "We don't have any commitments from customers yet, but there is a lot of interest. For the U.S. version, we have orders for Adelphia and Charter that will begin to ship in January 2001."

"We are bundling set-tops and cable modems together and both the U.S. and European versions are USB and Ethernet modems and include other features that customers are asking for," Davies said. "It's a very attractive solution. I think we're in great shape."
