Charter announces plan to develop set-top based digital/personal video recorder platform
Conjuring up memories of platforms and strobe lights, Charter Communications, Motorola, ReplayTV and Vulcan Ventures announced a joint DVR venture dubbed, "Project DISCO." The four companies will work together to develop and integrate digital video recording capabilities in advanced set-top boxes.
In an announcement made Oct. 4, Jerry Kent, Charter's president/CEO, said the venture will initially focus on creating a set-top-based DVR platform that will be designed for storing video, audio and Internet content.
"We expect Project DISCO to be to the digital platform what the VCR is to analog television …" Kent said at a Goldman, Sachs & Co. investment conference.
Digital video recording allows viewers to pause and rewind "live" TV and easily search for, automatically record and store dozens of hours of programs for viewing at a convenient time.
A formal name for the product will be announced later. Terms of the venture were not disclosed.
