Motorola licenses Gemstar-TV Guide technology for interactive TV guides.
Gemstar-TV Guide International has settled a patent-infringement suit it had filed against Motorola. Under the settlement, Motorola signed a long-term deal to license Gemstar-TV Guide's interactive-programming-guide technology and to make payments to Gemstar-TV Guide.
Gemstar officials put the overall value of the deal at approximately $200 million, including Motorola's settlement payments to Gemstar for past patent infringement as well as its future licensing fees for using Gemstar technology.
That technology - Gemstar's patented Interactive Program Guide - will go into Motorola's electronic equipment to provide interactive services via TV sets, ranging from TV schedules to advertising and ultimately e-commerce.
