Cutting too close to the bone at Qwest?
Qwest Communications International plans to cut capital spending on its telephone network by more than 36 percent next year, according to documents filed with the SEC.
Qwest plans to spend $9.5 billion company wide on Web hosting, its broadband network, wireless phones, data services and a voice network that supports traditional telephone service. Most of that money will be spent on the company's fastest-growing business segments, such as Web hosting and other Internet services.
Qwest officials, who repeatedly criticized U S West for underinvesting in the voice network, said its planned reduction in voice network spending next year won't affect service quality.
