Cox deploys NetMotion’s Mobile VPN solution
By Traci Patterson
CedMagazine.com - August 06, 2007

Cox Communications has completed the deployment of NetMotion Wireless’ Mobile Virtual Private Network (VPN) solution to all of its field service representatives (FSRs) - nearly 4,000.

The Mobility XE Mobile VPN deployed on field laptops, along with NetMotion’s policy management module, delivers sustained applications, even if workers move in and out of wireless coverage areas; smooth transitions from multiple wide area carrier, Wi-Fi and consumers’ home networks; automatic selection of the fastest-available network without user intervention; secure access to applications from the field, including work orders, billing systems and other databases; data compression and link optimizations; and a real-time view of device activity.

“NetMotion Wireless’ software helps us overcome everyday wireless coverage gaps and interruptions,” said Al Briggs, director of mobile solution services at Cox. “Their solution is helping to make our field service operation more efficient, ultimately helping us to deliver better service to our customers.”
More than 95 percent of NetMotion’s customers see at least a 5 percent improvement in productivity with the solution, and half of those customers see at least a 20 percent improvement. NetMotion serves more than 1,000 clients, and it is currently focusing its efforts on enterprise customers.

Cox began the deployment last fall. The operator previously used Padcom Inc.’s Total Roam software until the Padcom-NetMotion merger drove them toward Mobility XE, the combined companies’ solution. Cox is considering NetMotion’s technology for an internal, enterprise-wide VPN solution, Briggs said.
