Rogers goes mobile with World Cup coverage

Rogers Communications is putting its On Demand Online platform to good use this week with three options for World Cup soccer coverage.

Rogers officially launched its On Demand Online platform last month after the service was rolled out in beta last year. 

In a similar vein to World Cup coverage announcements last week by AT&T and Comcast, Rogers will carry all 64 matches live and in catch-up mode.

Rogers is providing the World Cup soccer coverage, which kicks off Friday, in partnership with CBC in order to offer up soccer games, video highlights and interviews through its On Demand Online, On Demand – which includes both HD and SD – and On Demand Mobile platforms.

Rogers has the advantage of having its own cellular phone service, which means it can stream live games, interviews and other highlights to its wireless subscribers who are using their iPhone, Android and Blackberry devices.

Jerermy Butteriss, Rogers’ senior director of broadband entertainment, said via e-mail that Rogers wireless customers can pay $5 per month to get access to video content from partners such as Sportsnet. For a one-time charge of $10, Rogers’ wireless subscribers can gain access to additional, downloadable 2010 FIFA World Cup content until July 11.

But wait, there’s more! Through Rogers' free On Demand Mobile app, which is available at the Apple App Store, Android Marketplace and Roger’s Web portal, Rogers’ wireless subscribers can receive free SMS alerts, schedules, ringtones and wallpaper.

All of the matches will be available in English, with some being broadcast in French, Spanish and Italian.

World Cup soccer action has been known to slow down workdays when countries’ teams are playing, and Rogers’ triple play of soccer coverage will keep hardcore fans up to date on the red cards, goals, saves and tackles.

"Rogers customers are passionate about soccer, and for the first time, fans can watch full matches and highlights online, on-demand and on mobile – virtually whenever and wherever they want to enjoy the game," said John Boynton, executive vice president of marketing at Rogers Communications. "With live and replay coverage of all 64 matches in English, French, Spanish and Italian, we're confident all of our customers won't have to miss a moment of the 2010 FIFA World Cup."
