INTERNATIONAL SPOTLIGHT - CANADA

CANADA

More than 95 percent of Canadians live in communities served by high-speed Internet access, and nearly 70 percent of Canadian households subscribed to a broadband service by the end of 2007.

CANADACable leads the extremely competitive broadband market with 52 percent of the market share, compared with DSL’s 48 percent.

Cable operators and telcos, and to a lesser extent satellite providers, are increasingly competing for the triple-play consumer.

The telcos have been relatively slow to deploy a video service to compete with cable’s triple-play offerings, and slow to secure subscribers. However, the IPTV sector is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years.

In the digital segment, in which satellite has traditionally dominated, cable has been aggressively migrating subs to digital. In 2003, satellite held a 61 percent market share, compared with cable’s 38 percent; but by September 2007, cable accounted for approximately 52 percent of digital subs, compared with satellite’s 44 percent.
