Indianapolis, Ind.—Trilithic Inc. has introduced its new ACM-8 Advanced Communications Manager, an optional module for its 9580 SST Ingress Monitoring System, which offers as much as a 10:1 improvement in ingress data collection speed over the CM-8 Communications Manager which it replaced, according to the company. Users can upgrade existing CM-8s in the field to the ACM-8 standard. In addition, current users of IngressManagR Monitoring Software can upgrade to Revision 1.4, which supports the ACM-8, through Trilithic's Web site.
Bedford, Mass.—Lasertron Inc., a division of Oak Industries Inc., has introduced laser source and receiver products designed for dense wavelength division mulitplexing (DWDM) optical supervisory channel (OSC) applications.
Distributed feedback (DFB) laser sources at 1510 nm and 1480 nm wavelengths are now available in 14-pin dual-in-line and "butterfly" packages. The QLM5S795 1510 nm laser is designed to comply with International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and Bellcore recommendations for OSC applications. The QLM4S785 1480 nm laser has been introduced for use in bi-directional OSC applications, with either 1510 nm or 1310 nm laser sources. The company has also introduced new versions of its low bandwidth pinFET receiver product line that are optimized for the OSC application and designed to work in tandem with these new laser products. The receiver modules are designed to operate with up to -54 dBm sensitivity, and at 5 MBps data rates.
Berkeley, Calif.—DiCon Fiberoptics Inc. has announced the production of its SP-Series singlemode prism switches, which feature rapid switching speeds, "excellent" repeatability, ultra low insertion loss, built-in position sensors, low polarization dependent loss and a wide wavelength range.
The singlemode switches are available as on-off, 1x2 or 2x2 configurations. All of the SP-Series Switches use a moving prism between fixed collimators, operating independently of data rate and signal format. The switches are actuated electrically and require 5 VDC to switch position. They are housed in a compact, environmentally-stable package designed for mounting on printed circuit boards or within an enclosure.
The on-off and 1x2 switches provide channel selection from one input fiber to either one or two output fibers. On-off switches provide a means of interrupting an optical signal, and are commonly used to isolate sources and receivers in test equipment and high security networks. 1x2 switches enable channel selection, and are suitable for protection switching, as well as for source/receiver selection.
Similarly, DiCon's 2x2 singlemode prism switch provides channel selection from a pair of input fibers to a pair of output fibers. 2x2 non-blocking switches are used for fiber protection switching, for node bypassing in FDDI and Sonet ring networks, and for switching between optical test heads in factory-automated test facilities and remote fiber test systems.
Liberty Lake, Wash.—Telect Inc. has unveiled two new fiber signal management tools: a wavelength division multiplexing module and a pre-fibered module. The new customer-configured modules let users gain the specific fiber signal management capability they need by selecting the appropriate module with the configuration and split ratio options that best suit their application.
The new modules are the latest additions to Telect's DataLINXS rackmount fiber enclosure product line, a family of splice, patch and distribution enclosures that provide secure fiber management in data or telecommunications environments. The industry-standard modules snap into DataLINXS enclosures or other LGX-compatible systems. For added flexibility, they can also function as standalone units.
The WDM modules combine or separate multiple wavelength signals on a single fiber to expand capacity, while the pre-fibered modules are fully loaded to exact customer specifications to facilitate easy installation. Two types of pre-fibered modules are available: DataLINXS- and LGX-compatible modules are preloaded with color-coded, six-fiber or 12-fiber cable; and Siecor-compatible modules are preloaded with color-coded, six-fiber cables.
San Diego, Calif.—RF Connectors has introduced its new IEEE 1394 cables and connectors. Designed to be used as a global interconnect, IEEE 1394 is a standard for high-speed, low-cost serial bus connectors and cable assemblies. All of RF Connectors' new 1394 cable assemblies and PCB connectors are produced in ISO-9001 certified facilities and meet or exceed IEEE 1394 standards. Stock cable assemblies are available in two-meter and 4.5-meter lengths, and PCB IEEE 1394 connectors are available in single-stack configuration in either black or off-white.
Sunnyvale, Calif.—Maxim Integrated Products has introduced the MAX3532, a programmable power amplifier for use in upstream cable applications. When driven with a 36 dBmV continuous wave input signal, and driving a 1:2 voltage ratio transformer, the amplifier can generate output levels from 0 dBmV to 62 dBmV. Gain is variable in 1 dB steps and is controlled via a three-wire serial digital bus, while the operating frequency range is 5 MHz to 42 MHz.
The amp features three modes of operation: high-power mode offers maximum output power; low-noise mode generates minimum noise at lower power levels; and transmit-disable mode (for use between bursts in TDMA systems) provides minimum output noise with high isolation. The device operates on a single 5 volt supply and consumes 375 mW (typical). Finally, two power-down modes are available: sleep mode powers down all analog circuitry, while maintaining the programmed gain setting, and shutdown mode lowers the supply current below 50 uA by disabling all internal circuitry. The MAX3532 is available in a 36-pin SSOP.
Hong Kong—Pan Asian Systems Ltd. has introduced its ASTRX PAS CON 550 cable TV convertor, which features a frequency range of 47 to 550 MHz, 61 channels, non-volatile memory, a CCIR/OIRT tuning system and a 0 to 15 dBmV input level. In addition, the new convertor offers +/- 100 kHz O/P frequency stability, 20 KV static discharge protection, 6 KV surge protection, 25 feet (min.) remote control range and 220 VAC AC power.
Chatsworth, Calif.—JMR Electronics Inc. has launched a new line of enclosures designed to serve telecommunications, desktop computing and audio engineering applications. The company's new Fortra line features brushed aluminum bezels that can be customized with color bands or produced in designer colors to match OEM, VAR or systems integrator requirements.
The enclosures are configured 2, 4, 6, 8-bays in a desktop design, 10-drive capacity, for 19-inch rack-mount units, or pedestals with 10- and 20-device bays for hard drive and tape backup applications. All units feature hot-swappable drives, fully redundant power supplies and low power-consuming centrifugal blower units for improved cooling. The tumbled drive canisters, which are made of extruded aluminum, have been designed to conduct heat better than standard enclosures.
Denver, Colo.—Columbine JDS has introduced a new video server playlist manager system, VSPM, that will allow operators to integrate video server control and traffic functions. Compatible with all versions of Windows NT, the system is designed to support video servers from Tektronix, Hewlett-Packard, ASC and BTS.
VSPM handles the entire process of spot playback, from creation of a video server playlist to creating and reconciling an as-run log. Once it has been loaded with the digital traffic schedule, the system identifies which spots have yet to be copied to the video server and automatically dubs them from tape. The on-air schedule can be edited from any approved workstation on the VSPM network, which gives traffic, promotions and engineering departments increased flexibility in making changes. The system also creates and reconciles an as-run log.
Richardson, Texas—Optical Switch Corp. has announced a new optical switch technology that will impact emerging "gigabit" optical networks. The technology is expected to address the needs of such bandwidth-hungry applications as high-speed Internet access and voice-over-Internet services.
The new technology is based on both Frustrated Total Internal Reflection (FTIR) and Total Internal Reflection (TIR). With this technology, the company says optical performance is optimized, yielding low insertion loss across any NxN connection (2 dB for an 8x8 matrix, for example), superior optical channel isolation and excellent optical reflectance characteristics with negligible polarization components. The technology can also be subjected to extreme environmental conditions such as temperature, shock and vibration, without degradation of the optical signal. The company is currently offering "beta" units for preliminary customer validation.
Marlborough, Mass.—Corning OCA Corporation is now offering dense wavelength division multiplexer and demultiplexer modules which are assembled on industry-standard (19- or 23-inch) rack-mountable shelves. Corning's 8200R Series DWDM product has been designed for use in advanced optical communications networks with eight channels centered on the ITU grid and with 200 GHz spacing.
Optional variable optical attenuators (VOAs) are available with the demultiplexing channels. The VOAs can be adjusted from the front panel in order to equalize the insertion loss across channels.
The 8200R Series also offers optional upgrade ports that allow two shelves to be concatenated in series to form a 16 channel multiplexer or demultiplexer. In addition, optional channel monitor ports allow live traffic to be monitored without disturbing the optical network operation.
Wilsonville, Ore.—Tektronix Inc. has introduced its new DMA120 Series of digital modulation analyzers, a line of portable field tools that provide in-service performance verification measurements for 64-QAM transmission. Designed for operators who are activating digital transmission or downstream high-speed data, the DMA120 is used with ITU-T-J.83, Annex B transmission, and the DMA121 with DVB-C.
With the new digital analyzers, operators will be able to test for transmission quality at the distribution node, fiber node or subscriber terminal. Some parameters can also be verified at the modulator or headend equipment. The analyzers provide automated, in-service measurements of signal level, adjacent channel levels, modulation error ratio (MER), estimated noise margin, error vector magnitude (EVM), and BER before-and estimated BER after-forward error correction (FEC).
The constellation display mode gives a graphic view of phase and amplitude distortion caused by transmission impairments, without removing the channel from service. The spectrum display mode allows for direct viewing of channel flatness and symmetry, and sidebands. The equalizer display mode allows the user to view the unit's adaptive equalizer coefficients, which indicate linear impairments such as flatness.
Research Triangle Park, N.C.—Sumitomo Electric Lightwave Corp. has introduced a new, compact, nine-pound Type 63 mass-fusion splicer. The splicer features an advanced optical system that focuses on 12 fiber images with the same resolution to allow more accurate loss predictions across the splice.
The splicer has been designed to complete a 12-fiber-ribbon splice in less than 42 seconds and can complete 20 or more splicing cycles when powered by a standard battery pack. Or, it can complete an unlimited number of cycles with its built-in AC adapter. The unit is fully automatic, menu-driven and has real-time image viewing at 40X through its 5.6-inch LCD monitor. Status messages, error conditions, splice results and splice data can be displayed on line. Up to 100 splice data points can be stored, and a new hood design is capable of withstanding cross winds up to 30 mph.
Roanoke, Va.—Optical Cable Corp. has introduced its new tight-buffered BX-Series Breakout indoor/outdoor fiber optic cable. The new cable has been designed to survive the outdoor environment and meet the UL Riser requirements for use inside buildings, which in turn can save installation time and cost.
The new fiber optic cable also permits direct installation of connectors on each fiber, rather than requiring the splicing of preterminated pigtails onto the fibers.
Islandia, N.Y.—Cable Resources Inc. (CRI) has introduced its new Return Display Unit (RDU) and Rock TV (RTV) signal generator designed for cable TV return system activation, maintenance and troubleshooting.
The RDU, which provides a live 4-44 MHz spectrum analyzer screen, features dual outputs: NTSC video and a high-speed, networked Ethernet port. The unit displays RF carriers, ingress and noise at a 250 millisecond refresh rate on any television connected to an operator's cable system, or personal computer monitors, host and remote. The RDU also features CRI's exclusive Ingress/Noise Averaging Number (I-NAN), which provides a simple way to "see" the noise floor signature of a live return system without a spectrum analyzer.
The company's new RTV features a ROCK signal generator along with a five-inch, black and white TV equipped with an 860 MHz digital tuner powered off a 5.2 amp battery. The RTV has been designed to simplify return field testing in homes and at ground blocks, taps, amplifiers and fiber nodes.
Salt Lake City, Utah—Vela Broadcast has unveiled its new RapidAccess system, a new distributed video server solution that combines sophisticated encoding capabilities, control software and compatibility with off-the-shelf disk storage. The new system is used to record, store and playback audio and video using MPEG-2 compression. The RapidAccess system allows operators to record and monitor on one channel while playing back four other streams simultaneously. A built-in confidence monitoring decoder monitors the recording process and compares it to the actual data stored on the disk. This permits any errors to be immediately identified. The system features the RapidAccess Media Management System, a unique file structure that handles clip content in an easy-to-maintain, user-friendly manner. A resident relational database handles all content management, playlist management and hardware asset management.
Richardson, Texas—Anritsu Company has introduced its new WDM Network Tester (model MS9720A), a high-performance optical spectrum analyzer that features optical network analysis functions for the evaluation of WDM transmission systems. The tester has applications in R&D for WDM transmission equipment and optical components, as well as for the installation, certification and maintenance of long distance, high-capacity communications equipment and cables.
A built-in SLD reference light source measures WDM signals greater than 120 channels, while three memories and three traces are used for analyses such as reflection attenuation, insertion loss, isolation, PMD and EDFA NF/gain.
Covering a wavelength range of 1450 nm to 1650 nm, the unit features wavelength accuracy of +/-20 pm, wavelength stability of +/- 5 pm and wavelength linearity of +/-20 pm. In addition, it has a resolution of 0.1 nm and 58 dB dynamic range. The tester's built-in wavelength calibration function makes it well-suited for WDM network performance monitoring. The optical spectrum analyzer also measures station monitoring of longterm stability of wavelength, level and SNR, displaying the results in tables.
