Synacor names Bernstein VP of ad sales

Synacor announced today that Ron Bernstein was hired as its vice president of advertising sales.

Prior to joining Synacor last month, Bernstein served as the vice president of product ad sales at AOL, where he was responsible for several key sales initiatives, including AOL homepages and AOL video sales.

Synacor said Bernstein was hired to help build out a national sales organization that will monetize advertising opportunities across their premium portal client platforms.

Recession hits smartphone makers in chips

NEW YORK (AP) – The seemingly recession-proof smartphone is suffering from a side effect of the rough economy: Manufacturers simply can't build enough of the gadgets because chip makers that rolled back production last year are now scrambling to play catch-up.

The chip shortage means Apple's rivals are having trouble making enough phones to compete with the iPhone, a problem expected to persist through the holidays. It's also affecting wireless carriers, some of which are seeing delays in improving their networks, and it could even raise computer prices.

Study: Cable carries more clout with Cali voters

According to a recent study, cable does the best job of reaching voters on key issues.

The study of California voters by The Tarrance Group found that cable channels offered by cable and satellite service providers were "critical for reaching persuadable voting blocks."

Time Warner Cable offers prizes for going green

Time Warner Cable is dangling some nice incentives to get its subscribers to go to paperless billing.

The nation's second-largest cable operator today announced its PayXpress Go Paperless Sweepstakes. Customers who enroll in paperless billing will automatically be entered for a chance to win numerous prizes, including the grand prize, a 2011 Lexus HS 250H hybrid car.

3-D TV offerings to multiply by end of 2010

By the end of this year, more than 50 broadcasters and pay-TV operators will be offering 3-D services to the home, according to a survey from IMS Research.

Consumer electronics manufacturers unsurprisingly retain their enthusiasm for selling 3-D TVs. Viewer enthusiasm for golf, baseball, hockey, football, auto racing and soccer in 3-D thus far is convincing many broadcasters that there's demand for providing at least sports in 3-D.

Apple closes Quattro, defers to iAd network

Apple today said it will close its Quattro Wireless mobile ad network.

According to a post from Apple on Quattro's website this morning, Apple will be deferring to its newly created iAd network.

"We believe iAd is the best mobile ad network in the world, and starting next month, we're going to focus all of our resources on the iAd advertising platform," the posting read.

Nokia buys U.S. mobile analytics firm Motally

HELSINKI (AP) – Nokia Corp. says it has signed a deal to buy U.S. mobile analytics company Motally to boost its offering for mobile software developers.

Financial details were not disclosed.

The Finnish company says the acquisition Friday underscores its attempt to improve mobile Web browsing analytics for software developers of its Internet services that are struggling to match competitor Apple.

Nokia's Ovi Internet service enables phone users to download things such as maps, music and games.
