House Committee passes Spectrum Incentive and FCC Reform Acts

Resolution 3675, authored by Chairman Greg Walden and Subcommittee Ranking Member Anna Eshoo (D-CA), passed with an amendment representing “a bipartisan compromise that presents the commission with a framework to bring additional transparency and predictability to the FCC.”

Two more studios using Dolby for UltraViolet encoding

Dolby Laboratories announced that Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Anchor Bay Entertainment now encode movies and TV programs in the UltraVioletCommon File Format (CFF) using Dolby Digital Plus. With UltraViolet, consumers can download and stream their favorite movies and television programs anytime and anywhere to their TV screens, personal computers, tablets, and mobile phones.

Liberty Global revives bid for Ziggo

Liberty Global has returned to Ziggo with another offer to buy out the rest of the Dutch cable company. Ziggo rejected a bid from Liberty Global in October for being too low. Liberty Global already owns 28.5 percent of Ziggo. It also owns the country second largest cable company, UPC Nederland.

Comcast adds more partners to SEEiT platform

Starting in the first quarter of next year, Comcast announced that more distribution and network partners would take part in its SEEiT platform that uses Twitter to click through tweets to programs. Comcast said the new partners would extend the SEEiT experience to millions more viewers by adding additional video distributors, television networks and an expanded roster of popular shows.

Evans boards Comcast as EVP, global corporate development and strategy

Comcast Corporation announced this morning that Alexander D. Evans would join the company this month as executive vice president, global corporate development and strategy. Evans will report to Michael Angelakis, who is vice chairman and chief financial Officer for Comcast.

RCN bumps up VOD offerings with upgrade

Thanks to a major upgrade to its on demand platform, RCN now has the capacity to offer five times more VOD programs than it could a year ago. Another benefit of the upgrade included RCN being able to add 40 new networks including Fox, NBC, A&E and Disney Jr.

Shaw, Intel invest in automotive apps company

Shaw Ventures has joined with Intel Capital in an $8 million investment in a UIEvolution, a company that specializes in connecting markets that have so far been of mostly peripheral interest to service providers. These markets include vehicles, wearable devices, augmented reality, and specific business categories, including retail, restaurant, hospitality and cruise.

AT&T’s GigaPower goes live in Austin

Today AT&T officially launched its U-Verse GigaPower service in Austin, which came out of the starter’s blocks with symmetrical 300 Mbps speeds before ramping up to 1 Gbps next year. Customers who sign up for the 300 Mbps service will be upgraded to the 1 Gig speeds when they become available at no extra cost.

Samsung signs on for RDK

Samsung Electronics America has signed up to license the Reference Design Kit from RDK Management in order to accelerate the development of its next generation set-top boxes and gateways. With Samsung on board, more than 100 silicon vendors, hardware OEMs, integrators, application developers, and service providers have licensed the RDK.

Ensequence signs two for interactive ad service

AMC Networks, and ReelzChannel have both signed up to use the interactive advertising platform developed by Ensequence. Ensequence’s AdConneqt+ enables national advertisers to include interactive features in 30-second ads. The first interactive capability to be offered early next year will be RFIs.

Cable One’s McKenna to retire

After nearly 19 years with Cable One, Jerry McKenna will retire from his role as senior vice president-chief sales and marketing officer at the end of the month. McKenna joined Cable One in 1994 as vice president-strategic marketing before being named senior vice president-chief sales and marketing officer five years ago.

The company has created a software interface developed in conjunction with Digital Alert Systems that bridges Triveni Digital’s GuideBuilder 5 metadata generation system and Digital Alert Systems’ DASDEC emergency messaging platform. The combination constitutes an integrated solution for the reception, generation, and subsequent distribution of messages over the M-EAS platform.

UUX sets up Telenor with video service

Telenor Hungary has just launched a video service using an end-to-end system provided by UUX. The system delivers video not just to mobile devices, but to any IP-enabled viewing device, including smart TVs. UUX  is the result of the recent merger of TotalMovie and OTT.

Time Warner Cable rings up two new phone features

Time Warner Cable has added two new, free features to its phone service. The first, “Answer Anytime,” provisions home phone calls to mobile devices or office lines in order to not miss any calls while the second, “Selective Call Acceptance,” weeds out unwanted callers.

NimbleTV tunes up TVE service in NYC area

After more than a year of beta testing, NimbleTV’s cloud-based TV Everywhere service is live in the New York City metropolitan area. NimbleTV provisions video, including video content from users that have pay-TV subscriptions with RCN, Time Warner Cable, Verizon and Cablevision, over the Internet to devices such as Apple iOS phones and tablets, Roku boxes and Web-enabled TVs and browsers.
