CenturyLink experiments with fuel-cell power

CenturyLink’s Irvine OC2 facility in southern California is now utilizing fuel-cell power. The two megawatt expansion commissioned by CenturyLink brings the facility up to 12 megawatts in total. Of that the fuel-cells make up 500 kilowatts.

Mediacom adds channels

Mediacom has announced it will be adding the DIY Network and Cooking Channel to its lineup. The company has added a new tier to its service called the “Kids and Variety Digital Pak.” The new channels will be accessed through this tier.

ESPN sues Verizon over FiOS pick and pay

ESPN has filed a lawsuit against Verizon for breach of contract. Verizon's FiOS Custom TV service allows customers to subscribe to a fixed 36 channels before picking additional channels to add to . . .

Right on cue and just as promised, Charter Communications is said to be holed up with financial partners, trying to arrange a new offer for Time Warner Cable. Charter is reported to be also be considering purchasing Bright House.

Amazon breaks out web services revenue for first time

Amazon Web Services is the biggest player in the public cloud-computing space, 5 or 6 times bigger than its closest competitor, Microsoft's Azure, and Google a distant third, according to analysts.

AT&T selling bonds to finance DirecTV purchase

AT&T has sold $17.5 billion in bonds in anticipation of its merger with DirecTV. To help secure Federal approval for the deal, the company is promising to expand GigaPower to two million additional customers.

Cablevision debuts packages for cord cutters

The packages start with broadband, and also make use of the situation that Aereo tried (but failed) to exploit – that local TV channels are free over the air. Cablevision’s new packages come with a free HDTV antenna that subscribers can install in their homes.

From the beginning, the company vigorously defended the merger as a great deal for everyone involved, but all of the proposed benefits were nice-to-haves -- nothing associated with the deal was imperative or solved any particular problem for anybody.

Modest U-verse growth in AT&T's Q1

AT&T’s broadband subscriber base grew by 440,000 to 12.6 million. The company’s pay TV subscriptions increased by 50,000 in the quarter. The company’s U-verse service makes up 69 percent of wireline consumer revenues, which is a 10 percent increase year over year.

Comcast activates Gigabit Pro in Florida markets

Comcast will bring Gigabit Pro to its customers in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm, and Jacksonville early next month. In total, 1.3 million Florida customers will have access to the fiber to the home (FTTH) symmetrical 2Gbps service, if they want it.

CenturyLink dinged $16M for 911 outage

CenturyLink has agreed to pay a settlement fee of $16 million to the federal government for a 911 outage that affected seven states. most were in Washington. According to local reports, the outages were due to a software coding error by Intrado Communications.

Comcast, TWC, the DOJ, and the FCC met yesterday; none are talking about what was discussed, but there’s increasing skepticism Comcast's proposed merger will be approved.

Arris to buy Pace for $2.1B

Arris bought Motorola Home for $2.35 billion at the end of 2012. Only last week, the company teamed with Charter Communications to buy ActiveVideo, for a total of $135 million. Pace, meanwhile, recently purchased Aurora Networks for $310 million.
