Verizon launches HD VOD in parts of 8 more states
By Traci Patterson
CedMagazine.com - April 03, 2008

Verizon has launched its high-definition video-on-demand (HD VOD) service in parts of eight additional states where the telco's FiOS TV offering is available.

The service has launched in California, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Texas.

In December, Verizon began offering HD VOD in Florida, Indiana, western Pennsylvania and Virginia (story here). Verizon said that FiOS TV customers in New York and Oregon will receive HD VOD in the coming weeks.

"As the popularity of high-definition programming continues to grow, we are delivering the best in HD content," said Shawn Strickland, Verizon's VP of video solutions. "With 10,000 titles each month, our overall video-on-demand library is the industry's largest, and we plan to offer more than 1,000 high-definition video-on-demand titles this year."

The telco recently announced new HD VOD content from CBS, Discovery Channel, Smithsonian Channel and Ovation TV (story here). Other titles include a mix of free programs from a variety of sources, including instructional videos from HowCast, movies from FearNet and music programming from Blastro Music, as well as a number of recently released blockbuster movies, the company said.

Each month, about 70 percent of FiOS TV's VOD titles – in both standard-definition (SD) and HD – are free of charge to subscribers.
