Tellabs touts 40 GB upgrade
By Brian Santo
CedMagazine.com - February 25, 2008

Tellabs has introduced a 40 gigabyte (GB) transponder module that can be dropped in to its 7100 Optical Transport System (OTS) to upgrade the 7100 OTS from 10 GB.

Tellabs says the distinction of its 40 GB upgrade is that its transponder simply plugs into 7100 OTS switches and requires no other hardware.

The company’s single-most-notable customer of the 7100 OTS announced thus far is Verizon. The 7100 product line hit the market in 2007. The 40 GB module will be available starting in June.

With the upgrade, the 7100 OTS delivers an increase in bandwidth from 440 GB to 1.76 terabytes (TB), providing more bandwidth for transmitting high-definition television (HDTV), video on-demand (VOD) and high-speed Internet access.

"Now, you don't need to redesign your existing network to meet the increasing bandwidth demand from video and other bandwidth-hungry services," said Dan Kelly, EVP of global products for Tellabs. "The new 40 GB transponder module for the Tellabs 7100 OTS is a simple solution that enables service providers to save money as they provide better service to their customers."
