Sprint shakes up management team
By Mike Robuck
CedMagazine.com - January 24, 2008

Sprint Nextel announced that it has revamped its senior management team.

CFO Paul Saleh, CMO Tim Kelly and Mark Angelino, the president of sales and distribution, will leave the company, effective Friday.

“I want to thank each of these individual leaders for their dedication and contributions to Sprint Nextel,” said Dan Hesse, president and CEO of Sprint. “I wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”

William G. Arendt, currently the SVP and controller of Sprint, will serve as acting CFO. John Garcia, currently the SVP of product development and management, will serve as acting CMO, while Paget Alves, currently Sprint’s regional president for sales and distribution, will serve as the acting president of sales and distribution. All three will report directly to Hesse.

“Permanent leaders will be named in conjunction with a review of overall strategy and an effort to streamline operations,” Hesse said. “I have no predetermined timeframe in filling these positions but plan to act as quickly as possible as I consider both internal and external candidates.”

Earlier this month, there were media reports that Sprint was looking to layoff several thousand employees (see story).

Sprint, the country’s third-largest wireless provider, has been struggling against rivals AT&T and Verizon. In January 2007, Sprint said it was laying off 5,000 full-time employees, and those layoffs have been completed.

Late last year, Sprint suspended rolling out more of the Pivot wireless service that was part of its joint venture with ComcastCox CommunicationsTime Warner Cable and Bright House Networks.
