Samsung Electronics has announced a set-top box (STB) that runs Macrovision’s Connected Platform software, which manages digital content within consumers’ homes.

Connected Platform provides the capability to acquire, manage and playback music, photos and video resident on other devices such as PCs and networked storage devices. The two expect to commercialize the product sometime late in 2008.

The agreement between the two companies outlines Samsung’s licensed use of the Macrovision Connected Platform Software Developers Kit as an embedded digital media server and digital media player. 

Macrovision announced in November that a set-top vendor had licensed its technology, but it had not identified Samsung as the licensee until now.

The Macrovision Connected Platform includes application software for media players and media servers, middleware that is a component of the Digital Living Network Alliance standard and is compliant with the Universal Plug and Play standard, and flexible application programming interfaces. Samsung said the product will conform to tru2way (formerly OpenCable).
