Roy joins CMC as VP of cable operations and engineering
By Mike Robuck
CedMagazine.com - December 12, 2008

John Roy has recently joined the Comcast Media Center’s (CMC) senior management team as vice president, cable operations and engineering.

In this newly created position, Roy oversees the video encoding and distribution services that the CMC provides to Comcast’s cable systems, HITS affiliates and other content distribution customers.

His job also includes management responsibility for the CMC’s Titan Earth Station in nearby Sedalia, Colorado, terrestrial content distribution the CMC delivers via fiber backbone, and its Encode Operations, IT infrastructure and video engineering units.

“John’s is well suited for his role on the CMC Management team,” said Gary Traver, senior vice resident and COO for the Comcast Media Center.  “In addition to his tradition of developing innovative solutions for the industry, he brings a wealth of MSO experience, allowing us to continue our tradition of anticipating and delivering solutions and services that are ideally suited for our MSO customers.”

Roy, who brings over 16 years in advanced engineering experiences to the CMC, most recently served as senior director of advanced video implementation for Charter Communications.

While at Charter, Roy and his team were responsible for engineering, designing and managing the deployment of advanced video technologies to over 5.8 million cable customers, including video on demand (VOD), HDTV, conditional access, and quality assurance for the MSO's video services.

From 2003 to 2006, he was director of advanced video engineering for Adelphia Communications, where his management activities included creating all of the engineering designs and deployment strategies for the MSO’s HDTV service and a centrally-managed VOD service that was rolled out to 18 operational hubs across the country.

He also worked on broadband and advanced video solutions at MediaOne, which was later acquired by Comcast, and Cisco’s Scientific Atlanta unit.
