RCN Corp. has picked BigBand Networks’ Broadband Multimedia-Service Router (BMR) to help it convert to all-digital in the cable operator’s Boston, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., markets.

Once the digital simulcast deployments are completed in those markets, RCN will be able to free up bandwidth that was previously dedicated to its analog spectrum in order to expand its channel lineups. The conversion, which RCN has named “Analog Crush,” will allow RCN to offer 300 SD and 75 HD channels.

“BigBand’s BMR platform enables us to convert to an all-digital environment, reclaiming our analog spectrum to free up bandwidth, so we can provide our customers with an exciting expansion of quality programming content,” said Rick Swiderski, vice president of engineering with RCN.

RCN’s conversion to an all-digital network will also improve the picture quality and free up room for additional international and on-demand content.

BigBand’s BMR1200 has been deployed by more than 200 service providers worldwide, in more than 4,000 installations. It is designed to support a variety of applications, including digital simulcast, digital TV management, digital ad insertion, HDTV and switched digital video (SDV).
