OSS BroadNet Inc., a hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) monitoring company based in Japan, is introducing its DOCSIS-based integrated monitoring service to the U.S. cable market.
The service provides cable operators with 24/7 monitoring of their HFC networks by diagnosing and pinpointing network problems – using existing DOCSIS devices – and integrating them with operations support system (OSS) and business support system (BSS) environments to improve workflow and create higher service assurance, a reduction in manpower and increased customer satisfaction.
According to OSS BroadNet, with the company’s solution, operators can expect a 20 to 30 percent reduction in operating expenses.
Currently, the service is being trialed with San Bruno Cable, an independent operator in California . Eiji Miyazoe, the president and CEO of OSS BroadNet, told CED that the company plans to market its service to Tier 2 and Tier 3 U.S. operators before tackling Tier 1 operators.
In Japan, the service has been deployed with J:COM, Japan’s largest cable operator, which proves that the service could handle the needs of a Tier 1 operator in the U.S., Miyazoe said. J:COM is also a technology investor in the company.
As VoIP and other advanced two-way services are aggressively deployed as part of multi-service bundles, cable operators require a proactive, real-time approach to service management that OSS BroadNet provides in order to scale the operators’ businesses profitably, the company said.
OSS BroadNet’s Open Admin/STM series software suite is a Web application that uses existing DOCSIS devices and offers an integrated monitoring solution for an operator’s HFC network. The software’s monitoring features analyze, correlate data and tendency, and enable operators to control the network for service quality while reducing downtime, trouble tickets and maintenance costs, the company said.
The company’s Open STM IM is an ingress monitoring software that monitors the upstream port of existing cable modem termination systems (CMTSs) on a 24/7 basis. By using the existing CMTS, and with the combination of ATT type Bridger Gate Switch (BGS), operators can quickly and remotely identify problems in the upstream transmission, the company said.
OSS BroadNet will have a presence at the National Cable & Telecommunications Association’s (NCTA) The Cable Show ’08, as well as at the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers’ (SCTE) Cable-Tec Expo 2008.
