Sezmi becomes a TV service provider
By Brian Santo

DVR-maker Sezmi has become a service provider, with two packages – one that stitches together broadcast channels with on-demand content and Web videos, and another that adds more than a dozen popular cable channels to the mix.

The company’s first market includes Los Angeles and some nearby areas. Sezmi is selling direct and through retailer Best Buy in L.A.

This initiates a national rollout, the company said . Sezmi did not specify what the next markets will be.

The Sezmi System, a DVR with terabyte storage, goes for $299. A $4.99 monthly “Select” plan gets customers access to broadcast stations and access to some second-tier channels devoted to kid’s shows, lifestyles and ethnic programming. On-demand content comes courtesy of most of the major studios. A broadband connection brings in Web-based video.

The $19.99/month “Select Plus” tier adds the cable channels, which include TLC, VH1, CNN, Comedy Central, SyFy and Cartoon Network, among others.

Sezmi Select customers receive local broadcast channels through the Sezmi reception system, including the major broadcast networks such as ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, MyNetwork, PBS, Azteca, Telefutura, Telemundo and Univision.

Sezmi Select also provides access to a selection of other local programming, which varies by market but may include sports, weather, ethnic, and even children’s programming.
