Launch mishap dings Dish’s HD efforts
By Brian Santo
CedMagazine.com - March 18, 2008

A launch problem has left EchoStar’s newest satellite in a lower orbit than intended.

Meanwhile, DirecTV is delaying a launch to avoid an unspecified potential problem.

The failure of the satellite to achieve its intended orbit hinders EchoStar’s ability to expand its high-definition (HD) channel lineup of its Dish Network service. Lockheed Martin built the satellite, and SES Americom operates it.

The companies will attempt to loft the satellite into its intended orbit. Burning the additional fuel will substantially reduce the 10-year service life of the satellite, however, assuming the attempt is successful.

Meanwhile, the launch of a satellite that DirecTV intends to use to expand its HD lineup has been reported as delayed for a week.
