Juniper Networks’ router garners energy efficiency rating
By Mike Robuck
CedMagazine.com - October 28, 2008

Juniper Networks said its T1600 core router successfully completed testing in the new Energy Consumption Rating (ECR) Initiative.

Juniper: Go GreenThe ECR is a framework for measuring the energy efficiency of network and telcom devices that was launched today by Ixia and Juniper Networks.

After undergoing the ECR testing, Juniper Networks said the T1600 was verified as the industry’s most energy-efficient core router, with a performance-per-energy unit rating of 9.1 watts per Gpbs.

The tests were performed at Ixia’s iSimCity in Santa Clara, Calif., using its IxGreen energy measurement solution.

“As we seek to improve network performance and meet our commitment to protect the environment, energy efficiency is a key consideration for NTT America, so it is encouraging to see equipment providers working together to create and define standards in this area,” said Kazuhiro Gomi, CTO of NTT America and vice president of the NTT Com Global IP Network.

The ECR was developed in collaboration among Juniper Networks, Ixia and Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, and it is an open initiative that welcomes participants and users from network equipment manufacturers, government agencies, carriers and enterprises.

The ECR has developed a vendor-neutral energy-efficiency metric that creates a common energy denominator between different network and telecom systems.
