Harmonic celebrates 20-year milestone; gears up for Expo
By Mike Robuck
CedMagazine.com - June 20, 2008

Harmonic will feature several new products and technologies at next week’s SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, including video compression for high-definition (HD) programming, IP-based headend consolidation to lower operating expenditures, and fiber-based transport to improve bandwidth efficiency.

Also at the show in Philadelphia, Harmonic will announce enhancements to its NSG 9000 Universal EdgeQAM and fiber-based transport products.

This month also marks the 20-year anniversary of Harmonic. The company was originally founded as Harmonic Lightwaves in 1988 with an initial focus on the development of optics technology.

Harmonic has since beefed up its digital video technologies with the acquisitions of DiviCom (2000), Entone's on-demand business (2006) and Rhozet Technologies (2007).

"Over the years, Harmonic has successfully set the pace by developing technologies that enable more efficient and superior quality video services for cable operators, including the industry's first edgeQAM, the first all-IP headend solution, the world’s first all-MPEG-4 AVC deployment and the first scalable node," said Nimrod Ben-Natan, VP of product marketing, solutions and strategy for Harmonic.
