Embarq chooses Ciena’s CN 4200 to up bandwidth
By Traci Patterson
CedMagazine.com - April 29, 2008

Ciena’s FlexSelect Advanced Services platform has been selected by Embarq Corp. – for deployment throughout Embarq’s network – to support the aggregation and transport of residential and business services. Currently, more than 100 nodes have been deployed.

Embarq selected Ciena’s CN 4200 for its ability to increase bandwidth and accommodate growing capacity demands. With the CN 4200, Ciena said that Embarq can carry the entire collection of books in the Library of Congress – or the equivalent of more than three billion voice calls at 64 Kbps each – in approximately eight minutes across a single fiber. The platform can also carry multiple types of voice, video and data traffic.

“Our customers are demanding new bandwidth-intensive products for their communications needs, and Embarq is committed to providing a network able to effectively meet those demands,” said Jim Hansen, SVP of network services at Embarq. “Our promise to customers is to offer practical, innovative solutions for their communications needs. This deployment gives us the added bandwidth we need to fulfill that promise within our current capital program.”

Meanwhile, Ciena has debuted its FiberFinder service, a fiber locating solution powered by NEF that offers enterprises and carriers the ability to identify available fiber resources while developing optimal network connectivity.

Ciena’s FiberFinder uses an independent database that catalogs millions of miles of U.S. fiber optic networks, covering more than 100 metro areas nationwide.
