Dish pays up on TiVo patent violation
By Brian Santo
CedMagazine.com - October 10, 2008

TiVo received $105 million from Dish Network, in accordance with a judgment against the latter for violating a patent owned by the former. That may not end the patent battle between the two, however.

Dish paid up only after all legal alternatives were finally exhausted. Earlier this week, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to reconsider the lower court ruling in TiVo's favor.

The initial award was for $74 million (story here); the balance was for supplemental damages and interest, according to TiVo.

TiVo believes Dish continues to violate one of its patents, which describes how viewers can be allowed to record one program while watching another. That issue is still being adjudicated. The suit was originally filed against EchoStar; EchoStar split the Dish Network into a separate company.
