Concurrent bows new MediaHawk software
By Mike Robuck
CedMagazine.com - March 17, 2008

Today, Concurrent took the wraps off of its new software for the company’s MediaHawk 4500 video-on-demand (VOD) server.

The upgraded software increases output for the MediaHawk server to 2,300 streams for standard-definition (SD) content at 3.75 Mbps, which Concurrent said is a 40 percent increase in output from the server’s initial release in January of last year. The new software also offers additional support for Comcast’s next-generation on-demand (NGOD) initiative.

“In a rapidly expanding VOD environment, there is constant pressure to increase streaming density,” said Michael Pasquinilli, Concurrent’s VP of on-demand engineering.

The MediaHawk 4500 is also compliant with Time Warner Cable’s (TWC) Integrated Services Architecture (ISA), and it is Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP)-compliant.

Concurrent said the MediaHawk has been commercially deployed in both NGOD- and ISA-based VOD configurations supporting advanced on-demand applications, such as TWC’s Start Over service.

Concurrent said that it has begun immediate shipment of the new software with MediaHawk 4500 servers.
