Cisco recently introduced its new Aironet 1140 Series Access Point, which was designed to work with Wi-Fi’s 802.11n technology.

Cisco said the new access point was designed to meet the need for integrating high-quality voice, video and rich media across wireless networks with greater performance and throughput than prior 802.11a/g-based wireless networks.

The Cisco Aironet 1140 Series Access Point offers full 802.11n performance with security while using standard Power over Ethernet (PoE).

The access point takes advantage of Cisco’s M-Drive technology – a new system-wide set of features of the Cisco Unified Wireless Network that the company said showcases Cisco's RF ability to deliver a reliable and consistent platform that further enhances 802.11n performance. According to Cisco, benefits of the M-Drive technology include improving wireless coverage and capacity, optimizing device connections and simplifying wireless management.

802.11n, also called Wireless-N, is in the Wi-Fi family of technologies but provides data rates of around 300 Mbps, or even higher. It is backwards compatible with earlier Wi-Fi technologies. Cisco itself has shipped more than 175,000 Wireless-N access points with its earlier Aironet1250 series.
