Camiant allies with QAM makers; also with SeaChange
By Brian Santo
CedMagazine.com - January 14, 2008

Camiant has partnered with five major QAM manufacturers to provide cable operators with an edge management system.

Separately, Camiant and SeaChange International announced that their combination of the former’s policy control resource management solution and the latter’s Axiom VOD software is now commercially available.

Camiant has worked with each of the five QAM vendors to make sure that their respective QAMs can all interface with Camiant’s Universal Edge Resource Manager (UERM), allowing MSOs to mix and match QAMs and manage them all from a single management system, Camiant said.

The five QAM vendors involved are HarmonicArrisBigBand NetworksEricsson-Tandberg and Motorola.

Cable operators will be able to maximize bandwidth efficiency across services, such as switched digital video (SDV) and video on-demand (VOD), while taking advantage of the technological strengths of different QAMs.

The integrated solutions enable true QAM sharing, freeing QAMs from being tied to a particular service such as VOD . Camiant pools Universal edge QAM (U-eQAM) resources to support everything from VOD to switched broadcast and data applications. In addition to enabling QAM sharing, Camiant enables operators to establish specific business rules and policies associated with video and data services, according to Camiant.

The combination of Camiant’s policy servers and SeaChange’s VOD software and services guarantees quality of service (QoS) and increases quality of subscriber experience for wireline, wireless and cable VOD users around the world, the two companies said.

An unidentified but “major” broadband operator in North America has deployed the solution, according to Camiant. Two North American companies known to be current Camiant customers are Cox Communications and Buckeye Cable.
